Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid, brilliant and original draughtsmanship.  He was a master draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but excelled primarily as a painter.  Matisse is regarded, with Picasso, as the greatest artist of the 20th century.  Although he was intitially labelled as a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920's, he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting.  His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

Matisse became a leader of fauvism, delighting in vivid color for its sensual and decorative value.

After the demise of fauvism Matisse continued to use color to communicate his joy in bold pattern and striking ornament.  In 1908 Matisse wrote out his theories for La Grande Revue; he wished, if possible, to paint a visual representation of his emotional reaction to a subject rather than its realistic appearance. By 1909 the artist's fame was worldwide.
